Delhi Police in its initiative for women safety have launched a mobile application named as HIMMAT (Courage). In recent past, Delhi Police has received severe criticism on increase in crimes against women in the Capital City of India. In fact, in last year, there have been few shocking rape crimes that took the country by storm.

Home Minister, Shri Rajnath Singh on Thursday 1 ^st January 2015 has launched a android mobile phone based Himmat application for Emergency help. It can be downloaded and installed and activated in distress to send SOS alert to fetch help.

The Application is under Testing :
The application released is a Beta version meaning that it is made available for testing is not the final version which might have more features. It has been cautioned that during the testing phase, if you encounter any life threatening situation, make sure that you visit nearest police station or dial police helpline number 100.

Compatibility of the Application:
This App is available only for Android Mobile phones with OS version 3.0 and above. Remember, iphones (Apple) and windows mobile phones which do not run on android is not compatible with them.

Is the Application exclusively for Women?
The Application is widely publicized as “Safety Application for Women”. However, at the user registration page under the option “gender” there is an option to select “Male”

 

How to download the Himmat App?
The application can be downloaded from Google Play Store. From your android cell phone,  go to Google Play Store Click Here >> and click on the green Install button.

 

 

How to use Himmat App?

1.    Download Himmat App from Google play

2.    Go to Delhi Police website and register and create your profile Click Here>>

The following information is desired for registering (a, b and h are compulsory field)

(a)   Mobile Number

(b)   Complete Name

(c)   E-mail id/address

(d)   Complete Address

(e)   Photo Identity Copy (for uploading to website)

(f)    Blood Group

(g)   Date of Birth

(h)   At Least Two Emergency Contact No

On successful registration user shall receive a registration key.

3.    Start your application in your cell phone and enter registration key

4.    In distress or emergency situations, you can activate the application by pressing SOS Button just once or by shaking the phone vigorously or by pressing mobile power button repeatedly.

5.    On activation as per 4 above, the application shall send SOS alert to Himmat 24x7 verification Call Center and Emergency Numbers provided shall also get the alert

6.    30 minutes of audio and video recording facility has also been provided in the app which can be helpful as evidence.

Does the SOS also send the location of the user to Police and Emergency Contacts?
As soon as the user starts the applications it asks for enabling the Global Positioning System (GPS) on the phone, make sure that you enable GPS along with mobile data. If both the mobile data and GPS are active the user location can also be tracked.
