Sending or bringing currency of Nepal and Bhutan – RBI revises exiting regulations
RBI has notified the Foreign Exchange Management (Export and Import of Currency) (Amendment) Regulations, 2025 to specify revised limit on sending or bringing currency of Nepal and Bhutan
The Regulation No. 8 of the Foreign Exchange Management (Export and Import of Currency) Regulations, 2015 has been substituted to provide the revised monetary limit of carrying currencies by a person while travelling in or out from Nepal and Bhutan.
RBI on 8th December 2025 amended its earlier circular dated 20/03/2019 to incorporate revised monetary limits as under:
Export and Import of Indian Currency to or from Nepal and Bhutan
A person not being a citizen of Pakistan or Bangladesh-
(i) take or send out of India to Nepal or Bhutan, and bring into India from Nepal or Bhutan, currency notes of Government of India and Reserve Bank of India notes for any amount in denominations up to ₹100;
(ii) take out of India to Nepal or Bhutan, notes of denominations of above ₹100 up to a total limit of ₹25,000;
(iii) bring into India from Nepal or Bhutan, notes of denominations of above ₹100, up to a total limit of ₹25,000 may take or send out of India to Nepal or Bhutan, currency notes of Government of India and Reserve Bank of India notes (other than notes of denominations of above ₹100 in either case); provided that an individual travelling from India to Nepal or Bhutan can carry notes of denominations of above ₹100 up to a total limit of ₹25,000;
