Dated the 24th July , 2017
My dear members of the Income Tax family ,
As you are all aware , we are celebrating 1571h Income Tax Day today and on this momentous occasion , I am extremely happy to extend heartiest good-wishes and felicitations to you all as well as to all your family members.
Though income tax was first introduced on 24th July, 1860 by the British to compensate for the losses suffered by them during our first war of independence in 1857, post-independence our Department has committed itself to collect revenues for the Central Government , essentially required to finance public welfare schemes , infrastructure projects and security of the nation. The evolution of our Department has thus run parallel to the socio-economic progression of our country.
In last few years , we have rapidly transformed ourselves from an enforcement agency to a citizen-centric, non-adversarial tax administration which has been possible due to adoption of new technology , a change in mindset of our workforce and the dedication and hard-work put in by one and all to commit ourselves in the task of nation-building through revenue mobilisation and encouraging more and more people to become tax compliant. It is absolutely critical at this stage that we do not lose our focus and continue to strive to excel in our endeavours with integrity , competence and professionalism , benchmarked against the international best practices in the area of direct tax administration.
Let us all rededicate ourselves today to the service of nation with the pledge that we shall continue to live by our core values of equity , transparency and accountability and will leave no stone unturned to contribute towards making a new , vibrant and self-reliant India.
I once again congratulate you on the occasion of Income Tax Day, 2017.
With warm wishes
Yours sincerely
(Sushil Chandra)
