RBI has issued a Circular setting a deadline of October 31, 2025 for banks to migration of their existing domains to the ‘.bank.in’.
In its Statement on Developmental and Regulatory Policies, RBI inter alia set out various developmental and regulatory policy measures relating to Cybersecurity. It was stated that due to increased instances of fraud in digital payments the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is introducing the ‘bank.in’ exclusive Internet Domain for Indian banks.
This initiative was aimed to reduce cyber security threats and malicious activities like phishing; and, streamline secure financial services, thereby enhancing trust in digital banking and payment services. The Institute for Development and Research in Banking’ Technology (IDRBT) was to act as the exclusive registrar. The actual registrations will commence from April 2025. Detailed guidelines for banks will be issued separately. It was also planned to have an exclusive domain viz., “fin.in” for other non-bank entities in the financial sector.
Now, RBI has issued a Circular setting a deadline of October 31, 2025 for banks to migration of their existing domains to the ‘.bank.in’. The migration shall be through the IDRBT, which has been authorised by National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI), under the aegis of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), to serve as the exclusive registrar for this domain. The IDRBT shall guide the banks on various aspects related to application process and migration to new domain.
All banks have been advised to commence the migration of their existing domains to the ‘.bank.in’ domain and complete the process at the earliest and in any case, not later than October 31, 2025.
